Making Flashlights Project

As a class we have been studying electricity. This past week students were given the chance to demonstrate their ability to use their knowledge of electrical circuits. Students were placed into groups, given simple materials and directed to make a flashlight with a workable switch. Below are some pictures and the questions students had to answer after complete the project. Student responses can be found in the comments section below. Enjoy!

Students: please add a comment below by clicking on the comment link. Please include your first name and answers.
  • What steps did your group need to complete in order to make your flashlight?
  • What prior knowledge did you and your group use while making your flashlight?
  • What was the most difficult part of the building process? Why?
  • Do you think this project would have been easier or more difficult to complete by yourself? Why or why not?

    1. Conect the wires to the battery and conect the wires to the light bulb holder.

    2. Trying to figure out how to do the swich.

    3. Trying to decide which wires go in the right place of the battery.

    4. It would be more difficult by myself because you would need more opinions from other people in order to get it right.

    1. We used all the items that our teacher gave us,but we needed some duck tape.
    2. We all worked together and made our plan and it worked out just fine.

3.The most difficult thing was putting the batteri in the tube.Putting the wires where the needed to be was difficult also.
4.It would have been more difficult without parttners becuase it was a little hard doing stuff all together.

    1. Put the battery in the tolit paper roll. Then tape the battery holder
    2. The most diffacult part was putting the wires in the tube
    3. I thought about where to put the wires and where to connect things.
    4. No, other people's help makes me consentrate and helps me.

1.WE GOT OUR MATERALS.WE PUT THE BATTERY IN.WE PUT THE LIGHT BULB HOULDER ON THE TOP.WE CONNECTED THE WIRES TO THE BATTERY.WE CONNECTED THE PENS TO THETO THE BATTERY.

2.THE SKILL I USED IS WHAT I NKOW ABOUT ELECTRICITY.

3.THE MOST DIFFACULT PART IS WHEN WE HAD TO PUT THE BATTERY IN BUT IT KEPT GETTING STUCK.

4.NO BECAUSE WE HAD TO DO ALOT OF THINGS AND BECAUSEWE HAD TO CONNECT ALOT OF THINGS.

    1. First we put the lightbulb in the lightbulb holder. Then we put the batery in the batery holder.

2.We used what a flashlight looks like. We quesed what part goes where.

    3. Putting it together. We didint know what to use as a switch.

    4. More dificult becuse I wouldent know where the parts go.

    1. We taped the load on a toilet paper roll. Then we fastened brass pins on the roll.On one of trthe brass pins we put on a paper clip which served as a switch. We put the battery inside the roll. We connected 2 wires from the power source to the load. The we connected the switch to the load with a wire.

    2. We knew that the ires had to touch the metal. We also knew that the wires had to be connected to the power source.

    3. The most difficult part of the building process was connecting the wires. It was difficult because we had to put the wires through holes in the load. Also the difficult part was to make the switch work.

    4. It would been more difficult to do the project by myself. It would be more difficult to the project by myself because, I would get tired doing all the work by myself. Also, it is fun when you work in partners.

    1. PUT THE BATTERES INTO THE THING AND ONCE IT STARTS TO WORK MAKE THE SWICH AND THEN MAKE THE FLASHLIGHT.

2.IT WAS TEAMWORK TO MAKE THE FLASHLIGHT TO TURN ON AND OFF.

3.IT WAS THE SWICHS FUALT BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT WORK SO THAT IS IT.

    4.NO IT WOULD
NOT BE EASY IF I HAD TO DO BY MYSELF.

2.I made these flashlights last year and i helped them a little and we also worked as a team.

3.Making the flashlight go on and off because our group had no idea how to do that.

4.Difficult because i'm not that good in science and becuase it has to much materials to work with.

    2. We had to put the wiers in place were the metle is.

    1. First, we screwed the light bulb in the bulb holder. Next, we taped the bulb holder to the body of the toilet paper holder. Then, we put the the paperclip in the body of the toilet paper holder. After that we put the battery in the toiletpaper holder.

2.We needed to know about conductors and insulators. Also we needed to know how toturn on and off the flash light and circuts and we used a series circuit.

3.The switch because we had to find out how to turn it on and off.

4.I think it would be harder by your self because it's just your knowledge. If your in a group it's everyone's knowledge together so it's easier.

2.What we needed to know was how to put it together.we also needed to know how to do it .We did it when we got our metarials.

3.The most difficult part was when we needed to turn it off and on.It was realy hard trying to put the clip on.We tryed to connect everything to the flash light. The battery was hard to take out and put in.

4.I think it would of been difficult by doing it by myself because putting all the stuff together could of been hard.If we did it by ourselfs we wouldn't know were to put the tape.

3.The most difficult part of the building process was the switch because it was hard to figure out how it was suppose to turn off and on the flashlight.

4.It would have been more difficult because without the other people in your group giving you ideas, you might fail.

  22. And that you cant put meadle to plastic. 3 The hardes thing for me was doing the switch. It was hard for me because there is a sertin way to put it.You cant just put it any way you want or it wont work for you.And also sometimes you will get confused like me. 4 I think the project would have been more difficult.because I wouldnt have all the help our team would need and I wouldnt have had the fun I had. Also there wouldnt be all the material we would need to do the project. that is what I think.

  25. Dear Malik,
I disagree with you answers for questions 1, 2, and 4..Also, you need to spell words correctly and give spaces between the words because people who read your answers will not understand what you are trying to type.
I disagree with your answer because it is too short and it takes more steps to finish the flashlight. I disagree with number 2 because I don't understand what you are trying to say.I disagree with number 4 because if you cooperate with others they will share. Also, I disagree that you should work by yourself. Because if you work together you will have more fun.

I agree with your answers. They were great answers.Question 1 was diffuclt for me becuase the battery kept getting stuck in the tube. The swtich was not the diffuclt thing for me it was getting the wires where they needed to be in the battery holder.Question 3 that part was difficult for me becuase, trying to find the right places for the wires to go in.I agree with you on question 4 becuase it was hard doing some things on my own for working by myself.

  31. Dear Malik,
I don't agree with your answers. They didn't make sense because for number one you put you need team work but what materials did you need. For number two what steps did you do to make the flashlight you put your minds. For number three you put the wires were hard but why.For number four I think doing it with a group is easier.

1 I disagre with u beacause I could hardly understand a word u said.2 I disagre with u because u dont have to put the wires together.3 I disagre with u because there was no number 3.4 Beacuse that was only that group there is many diffrent groups.

1.Talking about circuits in order to make our flashlight. We had to make a series circuit because it's really easy to make a series circuit the other circiuts are harder to build.

2.We were trying to make a circuit that was easy to make, and talking about insalaters that helped my group finish faster.I remenber that a series circuit has possive and negative and that the negative go to the possives. The circuit that we used was a series cricuit I know that because the light was dim in our flashlight.

3.The most difficult part in the building process is trying to turn the flashlight on and off with a switch beacause our flashlight had no switch.

4.It would be more difficult to complete by myself because I wouldn't have finished it on time because it would be really hard to finish.
